Welcome to my website for teaching and research. I am a Professor in the Department of Philosophy at the University of California Santa Barbara. Previously I taught at Syracuse University.
My research focuses on the history of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century philosophy: early modern metaphysics, natural philosophy, philosophy of religion, metaphilosophy, and anything else shiny that catches my eye. Publications include Spectres of False Divinity: Hume’s Moral Atheism (Oxford 2010) and The Architecture of Matter: Galileo to Kant (Oxford, 2004).
